The first lineup the New York Knicks tried out at their scrimmage on Sunday had the makings on an opening day starting five.

The departure of Carmelo Anthony left a gaping hole in the New York Knicks starting lineup. There’s a battle for Anthony’s small forward position, the point guard spot (again), and the center next to new franchise player Kristaps Porzingis.

Ian Begley of ESPN New York reports that the first lineup featured in New York’s Sunday scrimmage featured Enes Kanter and Doug McDermott. They were joined by Porzingis, Tim Hardaway Jr., and Frank Ntilikina.

That lineup looks a lot like it could be the starting five when the Knicks open the season on Oct. 19 in Oklahoma City.

The Knicks hope that Frank and Tim Hardaway Jr. are the backcourt of the future.

Ntilikina, 19, is yet to play against NBA competition but head coach Jeff Hornacek has already made it clear how very impressed he is with the rookie. Hardaway is a lock after signing that massive contract.

Kanter and McDermott are both candidates to take over the small forward and center spots. Michael Beasley, Courtney Lee, and Willy Hernangomez are likely their main competition.
