The New York Yankees have made a minor acquisition by signing catcher Wilkin Castillo to a minor league deal.
According to Jon Heyman of Fan Rag Sports Network, the New York Yankees have signed catcher Wilkin Castillo to a minor league deal. The move is certainly not one that will excite many fans, but it will improve minor league depth.
Castillo only has 22 career major league games and has not played a game in the majors since the 2009 season. He spent the 2016 season in the Blue Jays organization. In 10 games with the Blue Jays Triple-A affiliate, the 32-year old slashed .250/.250/.344.
The signing comes as a result of the organization needing depth in the minor leagues behind the plate. Castillo will most likely begin the 2017 season with the Yankees Double-A affiliate Thunder or Triple-A affiliate RailRiders.
It’s safe to say that this is not the move many Yankee fans are looking for, but it will certainly improve organizational depth.
