New York Yankees pitching prospect Alexander Figueredo was shot and killed in his native Venezuela last month.

The New York Yankees confirmed on Tuesday that pitching prospect Alexander Figueredo was shot and killed in his native Venezuela on November 27.

According to a published report in Venezuela, Figueredo was shot at a party in Guacara. He died from multiple gunshot wounds.

Figueredo missed the entire 2016 season due to being on the suspended/restricted list. The reason for the suspension is unknown. Last year he went 5-0 with a 1.89 ERA in 12 games for the Yankees team in the Dominican Summer League. He had 52 strikeouts, 22 walks, and allowed 55 hits in 57 innings.

The left-handed pitcher wasn’t a top prospect for the Yankees. The Yankees probably wouldn’t have brought him back for the 2017 season.
