St. John’s Red Storm guard Shamorie Ponds continues his impressive first year by being named the Big East Freshman of the Week.

The St. John’s Red Storm men’s basketball squad has had an inconsistent season so far.

One player who has been pretty consistent has been freshman guard Shamorie Ponds and the league has taken notice. Ponds was named the Big East Freshman of the Week.

Ponds deserved it after averaging 23.0 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 5.3 assists last week in three games. He also shot 53 percent from the field and 54 percent from three-point range.

Ponds scored 25 points vs. Cal State Northridge on Monday, which was a career high. In the next game against Fordham, he quickly broke his record with 26 points.

Ponds has been a great all-around guard for St. John’s, scoring, passing and also penetrating which has opened up more opportunities for him and others to score.

There’s also no reason why he won’t get even better. Ponds (along with Marcus LoVett) is clearly the present and future of St. John’s basketball and the fact that he’s already making a big splash in only a little more than a month has St. John’s fans even more giddy about his potential.
