Shamorie Ponds continues to show why he’s the real deal in the St. John’s Red Storm victory over Cal State Northridge Matador.
The St. John’s men’s basketball squad got another win on Monday, beating Cal State Northridge Matador 76-70 at Carnesecca Arena.
It was a struggle, unlike their previous win when they were lighting it up from the perimeter. Overall, however, it was a close game throughout and St. John’s once again showed some of their inexperience through their mistakes.
A win is a win, and once again one of their freshmen stepped up in a big way.
Guard Shamorie Ponds had another excellent game with 25 points which is a career high so far in his early collegiate career. He continues to show his potential in what he can do in different ways.
Ponds did a good job in getting teammates involved with some nice passes in transition, attacking his one-on-one matchups and continues to shoot the three ball well. He did a great job in the absence of fellow freshman Marcus LoVett who sat out with an ankle injury.
Sure, there were some moments when he showed his youth and made some mistakes, but, overall, it was definitely a great night for the Brooklyn native Ponds.
St. John’s schedule will get tougher as it goes on, including their next game against local rival Fordham who embarrassed them last season but there’s no doubt that St. John’s has some really nice future pieces that can only get better including Ponds himself.
