The St. John’s Red Storm Men’s Basketball Team made it official by hiring Mitch Richmond as its assistant basketball coach.

The St. John’s Red Storm men’s basketball squad has added a new face to the assistant squad.

NBA Hall of Famer Mitch Richmond, who spent last season as the school’s special assistant on the sidelines, was officially added to the four-man assistant coaching staff.

He will be one of the assistant coaches for head coach Chris Mullin. Richmond was Mullin’s former NBA teammate on the Golden State Warriors in the 1990s.

St. John’s also brought graduate assistant Luca Virgilio as an assistant coach. Virgilio studied economics and business administration in Italy and has been instrumental in making the contacts that got St. John’s to recruit European players like Federico Mussini and Richard Freudenberg.

Richmond takes over for Barry “Slice” Rohrssen, the associate head coach who left after one season.

Richmond has also worked with Mullin in the Warriors and Sacramento Kings front offices. Even though Richmond does not have any experience in the coaching aspect, perhaps his front office experience could help him jumpstart his recruiting skills and otherwise.
