New York Mets reliever Robert Gsellman is likely out for the remainder of the season with a partial lat tear, per a report.
On Sunday, the New York Mets announced that they placed right-handed reliever Robert Gsellman on the 10-day injured list. Gsellman had been dealing with tricep soreness. The placement was retroactive to Wednesday, Aug. 14.
Now, Andy Martino of SNY is reporting that Gsellman is likely to be shut down for the remainder of the season with a partial lat tear.
It’s unclear if the Mets will decide to recall right-hander Walker Lockett from Triple-A Syracuse once again. They recalled Lockett when they placed Gsellman on the 10-day IL, but optioned him back to Syracuse on Tuesday.
The Mets bullpen is currently 27th in the majors with a 5.17 ERA.
Gsellman appeared on the mound in 52 games for the Mets this season. He currently holds a record of 2-3 with an ERA of 4.66 and a WHIP of 1.366. Gsellman has struck out 60 batters and has walked 23.
He signed a one-year deal with the Mets prior to this season worth $582,500. He’s subject to his first year of arbitration this winter. He’s subject to two more years of arbitration after that before becoming an unrestricted free agent in 2023.
The Mets began a nine-game homestand on Tuesday. It started with a 9-2 victory over the Cleveland Indians on Tuesday night. The homestand includes three separate three-game series against the Indians, the National League East-leading Atlanta Braves, and the Chicago Cubs.
They’ll look to officially break into one of the two spots for the wild-card game. New York is currently 1.5 games back in the NL Wild Card standings.
