The New York Mets topped the Washington Nationals, 5-1, on Father’s Day at Citi Field on Sunday, avoiding a four-game sweep.
You may as well name Jun. 18 “Jacob deGrom Day.” The New York Mets prized starter left it all on the field today.
deGrom provided on both the offensive end and defensive end today. deGrom followed up an opposite field solo shot in the third inning with eight innings of one run (not earned) ball.
The former Rookie of the Year and All-Star made the best offense in the MLB look foolish, allowing just three hits, walking two batters, and striking out six.
deGrom lowered his ERA to a respectable 3.94 and collected his sixth win of the season vs three losses. He now has nine quality starts in 13 outing this year. No one else on the Mets staff has more than five (Zack Wheeler).
After a shaky first inning, the righty turned in a vintage performance and silenced any critics that said he won’t turn things around.
The Mets were able to score four runs off Nationals’ starter Joe Ross through the first six innings, and some individuals dominated at the plate today.
T.J. Rivera, playing 3B today instead of second, had a stellar day, going 4-4 and scoring a run.
OF Michael Conforto had also strong day at the plate. Conforto had two hits in three at bats, drew a walk, recorded two RBI, and stole a base.
Addison Reed closed things out, in a non-save situation, and New York was able to avoid the sweep.
The Mets are now 28-34 all-time on Father’s Day. Beginning Monday, the Mets will play 16 of their next 19 games away from Citi Field. New York is 14-14 on the road.
They will embark on a ten-game road trip that will take them to Los Angeles for four games against the red-hot Dodgers, followed by three in San Francisco and three in Miami.
