The New York Yankees may be looking to trade come the end of July and putting this prospect up for grabs might bring the best return.

We’ve now experienced the pleasure of witnessing young gun Luis Cessa in action in the major leagues with the New York Yankees. While he’s currently back in the minors, he’s still revered as being a prospect who can make a big difference in the majors some day.

After being sent down again after a one-day stint with the Yankees this season, Cessa has been nothing short of spectacular. And that’s one of the reasons why the Yankees could use him to get a pretty solid return.

I’m a big fan of Cessa. Originally a shortstop, Cessa made the jump to pitcher when he was in the Dominican Summer League. Only 25-years-old, he has a strong fastball and is a natural pitcher. He has an incredible upside to his career.

Hearing that, you might think that the Yankees would be better off keeping him, especially with veterans CC Sabathia and Masahiro Tanaka possibly on the way out. However, the Yankees farm system is stacked. There’s no room for Cessa.

While Cessa has the potential to be a major league ace, he hasn’t proven he’s ready just yet. Maybe it’s the spotlight in the Bronx or maybe it simply is that he needs more grooming in the minor leagues. Whatever it is, the Yankees actually can afford to let him loose.

They have a plethora of prospects lying in wait to get into the starting rotation. Chance Adams is making a strong case in Triple-A. Justus Sheffield is climbing through the ranks. When James Kaprielian comes back from injury, he’s one of their top pitching prospects.

These guys are younger and have more flash than Cessa did. Cessa is still a valuable prize but with all the talent waiting behind him, the Yankees can afford to let him go.

However, only under the right terms.

The Yankees are smart when it comes to making trades. They know better than to let someone of great talent go without getting a reasonable amount in return. If the Yankees are still in the position to compete as the season nears its end, they’ll need players who can perform now, not in the future.

Of course, that doesn’t mean that they’ll clean house with their prospects. No, they’ll likely send off Cessa in a package that could get them a veteran player who has proven they can help out the lineup this year.

Cessa’s numbers are not terrible. Last season, he started nine games and went 4-4 with a 4.35 ERA. Not bad for his first stint in the majors. During his stint this year, he pitched only one game, going 3.1 innings and allowing two runs in the process.

In the minors, he’s looking better and better with each start. While he has a 2-6 record and sports a 4.42 ERA, he’s putting together dominant performances while his offense sputters.

Cessa primarily works with his fastball and change-up, while also developing his curveball and slider. We’ve only seen a small sample from him this year but he still looks like he has major league-ready stuff.

But the Yankees don’t have room for him. Jordan Montgomery and Luis Severino out-performed him in spring training. They earned that starting role while he struggled. He’s still a viable option as a starter but if the Yankees need help right now, they probably can’t rely on him.

Which makes him the perfect trade chip to look into dealing. While we’ve seen great potential from Luis Cessa, there are several other pitchers in the organization who are stronger.

If the Yankees want to compete this season, they need some proven veterans. They will get exactly what they need if they consider putting him on the trading block.
