The wife of New York Mets closer Jeurys Familia is requesting that recent domestic violence charges brought forth be dropped.
The prosecutor in the domestic-violence case told Jim Bambauch of Newsday that the wife of Jeurys Familia, Bianca Rivas, has requested that domestic violence charges brought forth against the all-star closer be dropped.
Familia was arrested was arrested on October 31 after he allegedly scratched and caused a bruise to his wife’s chest and cheek. In a call made to Fort Lee police department Rivas said, “My husband had a little to bit of alcohol and he’s going crazy.”
When police officer Tony Pickens arrived at the scene he found cause to believe domestic violence had occurred.
Arthur Balasmo will ultimately decide if the charges will proceed during a Dec. 15th hearing, despite the objection from Familia’s wife. Balasmo told the newspaper, “she told me specifically that she didn’t want to pursue the matter. Ultimately, that’s my decision.”
The MLB could still punish Mets closer even if the case is dropped. Jose Reyes, a teammate of Familia, was suspended the first two months of the 2016 season, despite his wife not cooperating with prosecutors and having the domestic violence charges ultimately dropped.
Even if the charges are dropped and Familia receives no MLB suspension, the Mets will ultimately be disappointed with the acts committed.
The Mets will have to create a backup plan for the bullpen, whether it’s through trade or free agency.
