The New York Mets and Miami Marlins came together for a heartwarming, tear-jerking pregame ceremony for Jose Fernandez.
Tonight’s scene at Marlins Park in Miami, Florida is something so amazing, so original that it’s left players, announcers and all onlookers struggling to find the appropriate description.In properly sending off their fallen teammate, Jose Fernandez, the Miami Marlins put together a heartwarming, tear-jerking ceremony. Tonight’s opponents, the New York Mets, were also involved.
The likes of Giancarlo Stanton, Martin Prado and Dee Gordon were emotional. Even certain Mets were finding the strength to keep their emotions in check.
SNY’s Gary Cohen broke down once the ceremony ended and the broadcast turned to the booth:
When the game began, starting pitcher Bartolo Colon had nothing. His fastball was topping out at 84 m.p.h. The Marlins capitalized by taking a quick 5-0 lead after just two innings of play.
The most heroic moment of the night came via the first run when Dee Gordon smashed a solo home run to right field:
To the very second, every Mets fan could care less about the score.
On a night the 24-year old joyful Cuban was supposed to pitch, it will continue to be all about Jose Fernandez. Tomorrow will be about the NL Wild Card.
