By edging Phil Mickelson for the Open Championship, Henrik Stenson becomes the first Swede to etch his name on the Claret Jug.
For the majority of the 145th Open Championship, a two man race grabbed the attention of all onlookers.
American born lefty Phil Mickelson, who shot an opening round 63, was one of them. The other was Swedish born Henrik Stenson.
In the end, it was Stenson, who shot a final round of 63 to take home the Claret Jug at the British Open. He finished the tournament at 20 under, three strokes better than Lefty.
Stenson becomes the first Swedish born player to ever have his name etched on the Claret Jug.
This is Mickelson’s 11th runner-up at a major tournament. He ranks second all-time to only Jack Nicklaus’s 19 second place finishes.
Mickelson shot a six under 65 on Sunday and still lost. That’s how well played Stenson was all tournament long.
