Sure, it’s only Spring Training.
But Dilson Herrera’s game-tying inside-the-park home run in the ninth inning of Friday’s Mets-Marlins matinee was worth getting excited over.
Herrera, 22, drilled a 1-0 fastball to left field where Tommy Medica couldn’t make the grab and crashed into the left field fence. Herrera would score the Mets’ fourth — and final — run of the afternoon.
Herrera was expected to compete for a spot on the team before GM Sandy Alderson acquired Neil Walker in a trade with the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Although he likely won’t start the season with the big league club, the Columbian second baseman went two-for-two with a pair of runs and a ribbe coming off the bench on Friday afternoon.
He hit .211 with 3 homers and 6 RBIs in 90 at-bats last season.
New York tied Miami 4-4 to improve to 0-1-1 in Grapefruit League action. They are slated to take on the Atlanta Braves on Sunday, March 6 at 1:10 p.m. ET.
