Leading 3-0 in the fourth and 3-1 in the eighth, manager Terry Collins decided to leave Bobby Parnell in bottom of the eighth after he got into some trouble. He did so despite regularly using closer Jeurys Familia in these exact situations all season long.
The result was obvious and painful: the Mets allowed three runs to relinquish the lead and couldn’t rally in the top of the ninth.
Instead of cutting the NL East deficit to just one – as they head into the Dodgers series having to face Zack Grienke and Clayton Kershaw – they end up losing four of six on the road-trip and three back of the Nats.
Noah Syndergaard only surrendered one run in five innings, but the bullpen and the manager failed them in this one.
