The New York Islanders take a brief trip south on Tuesday night to battle the Washington Capitals.

Let’s take a look at this Eastern Division clash from a betting perspective in our Islanders vs. Capitals betting preview with odds, picks and predictions.

Islanders vs. Capitals Betting Preview

The New York Islanders are coming off a 2-0 shutout loss on Sunday to the New Jersey Devils. This is the second time this season that the Isles have been held scoreless in a contest. Now they prepare to face a Capitals team that is shorthanded with superstar sniper Alex Ovechin, starting goaltender Ilya Samsonov, defenseman Dimitri Orlov and winger Evgeni Kuznetzov all still out due to COVID-19 protocols. Forward Tom Wilson is also listed as day-to-day with a lower body injury.

Even with the deep lineup that Washington has, it’s still going to be an uphill battle for the Caps without their two best scorers and starting goalie, even against an offensively challenged Islanders squad.

This is the first meeting between the two clubs since New York eliminated Washington from the playoffs last summer in five games.

Islanders vs. Capitals Odds

Here are the lines for Islanders vs. Capitals at DraftKings Sportsbook:

Spread: Capitals (+1.5 -240); Islanders (-1.5 +195)

Bets We Like With an Islanders Win

Islanders Team Total OVER 3.5 Goals (+155, BetMGM)

In order for New York to win this contest, they must increase their offensive production, starting with their top forward line of Anders Lee, Mathew Barzal and Jordan Eberle, who account for six goals and four assists so far this season.

With Washington missing five key players and riding their backup Vitek Vanecek, the Isles need to take advantage of this weakened Caps lineup.

Bets We Like With a Capitals Win

T.J. Oshie to Score a Goal Anytime (+245, DraftKings)

The 34-year old veteran has two goals and four assists in six games this season, and with the Capitals missing Ovechkin and Kuznetzov, it will take strong efforts from Oshie and linemates Jakub Vrana and Nicklas Backstrom to produce on that top forward line in this contest. Oshie has 12 goals and 15 assists in 26 career games against the Islanders.

Bets We Like Independent of the Outcome

Game to End in a Tie After Regulation (+325 at DraftKings)

NOTE: This play is listed under different names depending on your sportsbook of choice. Some call this a 60-Minute Line, others a 3-Way line or Regulation Line.

The Capitals have played four consecutive games that needed overtime or a shootout to decide the outcome. Meanwhile, the Islanders have played in a couple of low scoring affairs that nearly headed to extra time. At plus odds, I like this game to end up tied after regulation.

Capitals vs. Islanders Prediction

Even with key players out, the Capitals are a deep club that can still compete against anyone in the league, and with the Islanders still having trouble with consistent scoring, I like the home side to pull out a 3-2 win in overtime.
