The New York Mets are expected to sign second baseman Joe Panik off the waiver wire, per a report from Jon Heyman.

Looks like the New York Mets will be adding to the roster as they try to make a playoff push.

On Friday, Jon Heyman of MLB Network reported that the Mets are expected to sign second baseman Joe Panik. The San Fransisco Giants recently designated Panik for assignment on Aug. 6 and then placed him on release waivers on Aug. 7.

Through 103 games for the Giants this season, Panik had hit three home runs with 27 RBIs. He’s currently posting a slash line of .235/.310/.317.

Panik spent time with the Giants from 2014-19, having won the World Series with them in 2014. He was also a National League All-Star in 2015 along with a Gold Glove Award winner in 2016.

The Mets can now have a set replacement for second baseman Robinson Canó, who landed on the injured list this week. In a game against the Pittsburgh Pirates last Sunday, Canó appeared to have injured his hamstring while rounding first. An MRI which came back on Monday revealed Canó tore his hamstring.

Canó won’t be back in the lineup for quite some time, possibly for the rest of the season. Panik can now be that replacement as the Mets continue their winning ways.

New York is the hottest team in baseball at the moment, as they’ve won 13 of their last 14 games. They’re currently .5 games back in the National League Wild Card race and have a huge three-game series against the Washington Nationals starting on Friday. The Nats lead the Wild Card race right now by 2.0 games.
