Three goals were scored in the span of just 1:09, with the New York Islanders goals coming from Mat Barzal and Cal Clutterbuck.

The first 17 minutes of the first period between the Carolina Hurricanes and the New York Islanders was scoreless. Then, the last three minutes happened.

First, it was the rookie Mathew Barzal who went off on an odd-man rush with Jordan Eberle. Known as a passer, the crowd eagerly anticipated the connection to Eberle, but instead were perfectly satisfied with a goal.

Then, Anders Lee committed a tripping minor on Justin Faulk and the Islanders were on their way to the PK. It seemed that the Islanders momentum would let up, but seven seconds in quite the opposite happened when Cal Clutterbuk potted his third goal of the season past Darling top shelf.

In the confusion following Clutterbuck’s short-handed goal, Elias Lindholm took advantage of a shot from Sebastian Aho — the Hurricanes Sebastian Aho — and tipped it past Thomas Greiss to put the Hurricanes right back on the board.

The Islanders weren’t going to let their three-goal lead be denied, and Nick Leddy restored it with a wrist shot that Scott Darling flubbed with just 28.6 seconds left in the first.

So, if you were afraid the Islanders were going to fall victim to another slow start, then fear not — they did just the opposite.

The shots on goal stand at 14-9 in favor of the Islanders as they carry their 3-1 lead into the second period. Catch the action on MSG+.
