The New York Yankees will reportedly interview the bench coach for the Giants, Hensley Meulens, for the vacant managerial position.
On the long-list of management options for the New York Yankees now sits Hensley Meulens, who will interview for the vacant position left by Joe Girardi, per Joel Sherman of the NY Post.
Meulens, 50, is currently the bench coach for the San Francisco Giants. He was signed by the Yankees as an amateur free agent in 1985 and played 159 games for them from 1989 to 1993 while slashing .221/.290/.344.
Following his Yankee career, Meulens played in Japan from 1994–1996, returned to the United States and saw two unsuccessful stints with the Montreal Expos and Arizona Diamondbacks before retiring in 2002.
His coaching career kicked off in 2003 with the Bluefield Orioles. In 2005-08, Meulens served as the Indianapolis Indians’ (Triple-A affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates) hitting coach. Meulens shifted to the hitting coach of the Giants’ Triple-A affiliate before taking over as the hitting coach for the Major League team in 2010. Just recently, he was promoted to bench coach under Bruce Bochy.
He also managed the Netherlands at the World Baseball Classic, despite having zero previous MLB managing experience.
According to the report, former Yankee Aaron Boone will also interview but don’t expect these interviews to come soon, as the team will postpone interviews until after the general manager meetings in Orlando, Fla.
