Scott Mayfield slapped a puck on net, and thanks to a fortuitous bounce, put the New York Islanders in front early on.

That didn’t take long, did it?

Less than five minutes into the first period, Scott Mayfield slapped a puck on net that pin-balled around and found its way past Jonathan Bernier for a 1-0 lead for the Islanders.

Mayfield enters tonight’s contest for the first time since the Islanders’ 6-4 loss to the Minnesota Wild — just like teammate Thomas Greiss.

Mayfield has made himself known in the lineup so far this season and after being replaced temporarily by Thomas Hickey, he makes himself known again tonight with a quick go-ahead goal.

Also of note, Josh Bailey extended his point streak to nine straight games with the assist on the goal — Bailey has two goals and 12 assists in this span.

The Islanders currently lead the Colorado Avalanche 2-0 in the first period on MSG+.
