A squirt of a water bottle just cost New York Rangers forward Kevin Hayes $5,000. Maybe ‘NHL’ really stands for the ‘No H2O League.’

During last night’s 2-1 overtime victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning, New York Rangers forward Kevin Hayes decided to have a little fun at the expense of Lightning forward Alex Killorn.

As the teams were setting up for a faceoff in front of the Rangers bench, Hayes squirted some water at Killorn, who obviously was not in the mood for a water fight. Killorn spun around and jabbed his stick at the water bottle Hayes was holding on the bench. J.T. Miller took exception to that and crossed checked Killorn into the boards, causing another scrap in what had become a chippy game.

Steven Stamkos, Tampa Bay’s superstar center, was irate about what occurred and went to squirt water at the Rangers bench. He missed, inadvertently hitting Rangers announcer John Giannone instead. Stamkos did apologize afterward.

The NHL was not thrilled with any of this extra activity during the game and fined Hayes, Killorn and Steven Stamkos $5,000 each for their parts in the fracas.
