The New York Yankees are looking for a new manager, and former first baseman Mark Teixeira believes the perfect candidate is internal.

It seems as though everyone is giving their recommendations for who should be the next New York Yankees‘ manager and former first baseman Mark Teixeira has his.

Teixeira, who played in the Bronx from 2009-16, believes bench coach Rob Thomson “would be perfect in New York” and sees him as the best candidate to fill the vacancy left by Joe Girardi, per NJ Advanced Media.

Thomson was on the Yankees’ coaching staff during the entirety of Teixeira’s career in the Bronx as the bench coach, third base coach and bench coach again — where he remains. He made ESNY’s list of top candidates for the position and, thanks to his long career with the organization, is expected to be interviewed by general manager Brian Cashman.

Other candidates include current first base coach Tony Pena, Triple-A manager Al Pedrique and third base coach Joe Espada, among others. But Teixeira believes Thomson’s ability to work with the coaches, front office, clubhouse, and media makes him an obvious choice for the position Girardi held for 10 years.

This doesn’t mean Thomson is the frontrunner by any means. However, we know the ideal candidate for Cashman is someone who’s worked with him, has a great connection with the clubhouse and is an analytics-driven manager. Thomson checks those boxes, which is why he’s considered a favorite.
