Now that Joe Girardi is no longer managing the New York Yankees, WFAN’s Mike Francesa revealed a ‘secret’ he’s been keeping for awhile.
The pope of sports-talk radio, Mike Francesa, let the world know Thursday afternoon that former New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi was not as beloved as we’ve been led to believe.
“I’m going to be honest with you here,” Francesa said to a caller who was talking about the players appearing to be indifferent when it came to Girardi. “There’s a good group of the players who don’t like Joe.”
The caller pressed Francesa, asking if someone was going to put some names to that bold statement. “I’m not going to,” was the reply. “But I’m going to be honest with you …there were a good group of players, more than a couple of players, who weren’t big Giardi fans.”
As the caller began to rattle off names, Francesa said “I don’t think any of them were the kids. Actually, I think one is.” When the caller guessed Gary Sanchez, he was rewarded for his luck.
“You got it, because Joe was very hard on him. …And you probably know that he had a lot of trouble with the stars on the way down. He and [Jorge] Posada hated each other. He had a lot of trouble with [Derek] Jeter, a little trouble with Jeter, a lot of trouble with Jorge, a lot of trouble with the big stars on the way down, handling them.”
This is all great, Mike, but does any of it matter?
Jeter and Posada have been retired for years. Clearly, this year’s roster was able to get over whatever ‘issues’ they had with their skipper—otherwise, the Yanks never would have come within one game of the World Series. And now Girardi is gone.
Wake me up when the Yankees announce who will replace Joe Girardi—and his magical binder—as the next manager of the New York Yankees.
