Detroit Pistons head coach Stan Van Gundy was surprised at one defensive strategy from the New York Knicks on Saturday night.

The New York Knicks dropped their home opener, 111-107, to the Detroit Pistons on Saturday night. A big part of New York falling to 0-2 on the season was the performance of Tobias Harris.

Harris, a Long Island native, scored 31 points on 13-of-24 shooting. He made 5 of his 6 fourth quarter shots and scored 12 points in the final period. Pistons head coach Stan Van Gundy was surprised at how the Knicks guarded his star wing player.

The former Orlando Magic coach was surprised that the Knicks used Kristaps Porzingis on Harris. According to Van Gundy, that made things easier for his team on offense in the pick-and-roll.

Via Vince Ellis of The Detroit Free Press:

“They both were going well and we were trying to go at (Porzingis),” Van Gundy said. “(He) kills you at one end and for some reason they were playing him on Tobias, I don’t know why, but they were, so we went at that pick-and-roll.”

Porzingis was incredible on Saturday; scoring 33 points on 11-of-20 shooting. The unicorn’s big night was ruined by poor second half defense from New York. This came after they had a 13 point lead at halftime.
