One game. Nine innings. 27 outs. That’s all that separates the New York Yankees and the Baby Bombers from a trip to the World Series.
The New York Yankees are inexplicably one game away from their first World Series appearance since winning it all back in 2009. The Bombers are up 3-2 on the American League Central champion Houston Astros after roughing up Astros’ ace Dallas Keuchel in Game 5 at Yankee Stadium on Wednesday night.Game 6 will feature a pitching matchup for the ages: Luis Severino, the Yankees 23-year-old ace vs. Houston’s big acquisition at this year’s trade deadline, former AL MVP and Cy Young Award winner Justin Verlander.
This is a pitching rematch of Game 2 which saw the Astros win 2-1 in walk-off fashion. Verlander tossed a complete game gem, only allowing one run on five hits while striking out 13. Severino pitched well, allowing just one run on two hits over four innings before getting pulled after being hit by a line drive. While he doesn’t have the experience Verlander does, Severino is excited and seems ready for the moment.
If the Yankees can’t punch their ticket to the Fall Classic tonight, they have another chance Saturday night in a do-or-die Game 7 in Houston.
