New York Giants wide receiver Brandon Marshall officially announces his season as over via injury through his personal Instagram account.
Another New York Giant receiver’s season is over.
Brandon Marshall, one of four Giants receivers injured in Sunday’s 27-22 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers, announced via Instagram he would undergo season-ending surgery. Marshall injured his ankle during a second quarter drive and was carted off the field.
“Tomorrow I’ll have surgery ending year 12 [sic],” part of Marshall’s caption read. “I’m filled with mixed emotions. I wasn’t able to produce for my team the way I wanted to but this was my greatest year to date. This game has shown me who I really am good and bad. This game has given me the opportunity to grow as a man, father, husband, teammate, leader.. . I’m so thankful for this game.. .”
Thus ends Marshall’s first season with the Giants, shortened to five games after signing a two-year, $12 million contract with the team last March. Marshall had spent the previous two seasons with the New York Jets and created a small stir when he stated the Jets “didn’t have a chance” in the 2017 season. Marshall also engaged in a war of words with former Jets teammate Sheldon Richardson, who has since been traded to Seattle. The Jets currently sit at 3-2, tied for the AFC East lead, while the Giants, stuck at 0-5, are one of the NFL’s three remaining winless teams with Cleveland and San Francisco.
Despite his arrival raising expectations for the Giants this season, Marshall struggled in his five games with the Giants. Through the first two games, he had just two receptions on nine targets, though he seemed to be hitting a rhythm over the recent trips to Philadelphia and Tampa, combining for 112 yards on 14 receptions. His season ends with 18 receptions for 154 yards and no touchdowns, all career lows, although he has never previously played less than 13 games in a season. In his past 11 season, Marshall had missed just nine games.
Despite an otherwise stellar NFL career, having gone to the Pro Bowl six times and tallying over 12,000 yards and 82 touchdowns, Marshall, 33, has never been on a playoff team, a trend that doesn’t appear to be ending this season.
Marshall’s announcement comes hours after head coach Ben McAdoo stated that fellow receiver Odell Beckham Jr. would likewise be undergoing season-ending surgery on his ankle, joining Dwayne Harris, who fractured his foot. Meanwhile, Sterling Shepard, who left a few plays earlier on the same drive Marshall was injured with another ankle injury, was listed as “day-to-day”.
The Giants head to Denver this Sunday for a prime-time match with the Broncos (8:30 p.m. ET, NBC).
