The New York Yankees have two games left and are two games behind. If you guessed you’d be in this position at the beginning of the season, you’re lying.
The season is winding down and Oct. 3 looms ever closer. But wait! That date might have no significance after all, especially if the Yankees can pull off the impossible.
But enough about projections. Let’s talk about Greg Bird.
We all know Bird is riding a seven-game hitting streak. During that span, he is batting .500. That’s pretty solid for a guy who might not have even made it back this season.
So, what’s his secret? That sweet swing is finally producing and we want to know why. Perhaps it’s simply because he’s finally healthy and is able to feel comfortable at the plate again.
Either that or maybe he’s getting the support he needs from his family, as the Yankees Twitter account showed today.
I can certainly see the resemblance. However, one of those birds has six home runs this month while the other just flies around. That’s up to you to figure out.
With yesterday’s victory, the Yankees earned themselves their 90th win of the season. For a team that was projected to finish fourth in the division, that’s pretty darn impressive.
The last time the Yankees had at least 90 regular season victories was in 2012, where they won the ALDS and lost in the ALCS to the Detroit Tigers (RIP Derek Jeter’s ankle).
But what an incredible run they’ve had so far! A 90-win season isn’t anything to sneeze at, no matter how the playoffs turn out for the Yankees.
Not only that, but according to Erik Boland, this marks the 61st season in which the Yankees have won 90+ games.
Plus, they reached another milestone today with Masahiro Tanaka striking out practically every Blue Jay and their mother.
So…since Tanaka struck out 15 batters, that means the bullpen only struck out three. Hey, that’s okay. It’s even more impressive when your starting pitcher notches the majority of those strikeouts.
Today is a new day! The division is still in sights and the playoffs are right around the corner. Let’s get it done, Yankees.
