The New York Jets aren’t expected to do much this season, but it’s time to get the first win of the season.

Everything is ripe for the picking. The New York Jets are going to have their home opener after two weeks of shoulda, coulda, woulda football. They’re playing a divisional opponent that has only played one game this season and are now playing their second straight road game.

These divisional games are already considered 50-50 toss-ups, where records don’t mean anything. So why can’t the Jets win on Sunday against the Miami Dolphins?

ESPN FPI Analytics suggest that it isn’t likely, giving the Dolphins a near 67 percent chance to beat the Jets on Sunday. Plus, the Dolphins on the road are giving the Jets six-and-a-half points. Which is a bit strange.

For instance, what is Jay Cutler?

How could anyone know, as he’s only played one game this season for a completely new team? The veteran was apparently tepid in his first game with the Dolphins. I spoke to Miami Dolphins Insider Brian Miller on The Jets Zone podcast and he agreed. He said Cutler wasn’t the gunslinger he usually is. While my main concern is that the Jets could get gashed on the ground.

While Cutler is dangerous, my main concern is that the Jets could get gashed on the ground.

They gave up 190 yards on the ground to the Buffalo Bills in Week 1. Marshawn Lynch ran ramshod over the Jets for Oakland in Week 2, despite having only 45 yards rushing. While I have my concerns with Miami’s Jay Ajayi, I think the Jets can step up to the plate.

They’ve got the talent on defense, they’ll have the emotion of the home crowd, and an ‘us against the world’ mentality.

X-Factor

Jermaine Kearse. While many people disregarded him in the trade for Sheldon Richardson, he’s been exactly what the Jets need. A savvy, under-the-radar veteran. He doesn’t demand the ball. He won’t complain, all he does is perform.

While I think his route running is above average, he needs to break off those routes and come back to the ball. I’m nitpicking at this point, but I love what he brings to the table. He has a nose for the end zone and is reliable. Something Jets receivers haven’t been recently.

A quick mini-rant since we’re talking about the wide receiver position. PLAY THE FREAKING ROOKIES. ArDarius Stewart and Chad Hansen should be getting a lot of the snaps. This is what I feared when Jeremy Kerley was added to the equation. One veteran is enough to provide mentorship and show the players how they’re supposed to prepare.

The Kerley signing doesn’t make a ton of sense to me and it’s jeopardizing the development of some pieces that can help the Jets in the future, not just this season. But I digress, hopefully, Kerley fries can avoid the fair catch, maybe then I’ll be happy.

Although I’d be happier with a win on Sunday. The Jets have the tools to do it and wins are going to be few and far between in 2017. The best chance at putting wins on the board may just come from the division and I’m not talking about the New England Patriots.
