The New York Giants added to their secondary Saturday, acquiring cornerback Ross Cockrell from Pittsburgh.

While the focus in the NFL Saturday was on players cut—and claimed—as teams whittled down to their 53-man rosters, New York Giants general manager Jerry Reese swung a deal for Pittsburgh corner Ross Cockrell.

After Janoris Jenkins, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and Eli Apple, the Giants were a bit thin at cornerback. Adding Cockrell solves that problem.

Cockrell started all 16 games for the Steelers last season, finishing sixth on the team with 47 tackles while recovering one fumble.

He became expendable for the Steelers after they signed Joe Haden, who was released by Cleveland. But Cockrell was on shaky ground before Haden’s arrival, having been beaten out for a starting spot by Cody Sensabaugh in training camp.

Over his four-year career, the Duke University product has appeared in 38 games, recording 81 tackles, two interceptions and a forced fumble.
