It finally happened. New York Jets star Sheldon Richardson has been traded to the Seattle Seahawks.
This deal was talked about earlier this offseason and, according to sources, the Seattle Seahawks didn’t want to take on Sheldon Richardson’s salary.
That was no longer an issue after the Seahawks cleared cap space earlier this week.
This re-opened those trade discussions and you can be sure that this won’t be the last deal the Jets complete this season. Not only do the Jets add an experienced wideout in Jermaine Kearse, but a valuable second-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft as well.
That’s going to help the team as the rebuild continues.
Richardson was entering the last year of his deal and really wasn’t a long-term fit with the team. The Jets weren’t going to offer him what he’s going to want in a new deal. It’s a deal that brings back far more than a compensatory draft pick after the season would.
Kearse, 27, has 153 receptions for 2,109 yards and 11 touchdowns over parts of five years with Seattle. His best season came in 2015 when he caught 49 passes for 685 yards and five touchdowns.
