Today, we celebrate the day Momma Gardner welcomed New York Yankees legend Brett Gardner into the world and how we’re all better for it.

One of the most underrated players on the New York Yankees, Brett Gardner has not by any means been a superstar. He hasn’t drawn in the MVP votes or been recognized by the sport of baseball, besides his Gold Glove last year.

And today, the longest-tenured Yankee celebrates his 34th birthday, making him officially “over-the-hill” in baseball terms. Yet, we still love the speedy jokester who inhabits left field at Yankee Stadium, regardless of whether he’s slumping or hitting bombs.

In honor of Gardner’s big day, I’ve decided he deserved a little extra recognition for all he’s done for the Yankees and their fans. And that’s where this short poem came to light.

So for all those who respect and love Brett Gardner for all he’s done for this team, put this poem in your memory banks because it’s about to become the next big thing.

Brett Gardner: The Birthday Boy

When it comes to Brett Gardner,

We love to reminisce

So allow us to put out

A cheesy poem like this.

When we first met Gardy,

He was a shy, skinny kid

Who wanted to make a difference in the Bronx

And, boy, that he did.

Starting off real strong,

Gardy provided a spark

For a Bronx Bombers team

That was coming out of the dark.

His second season in 2009,

He gave the Yankees a boost

By showing he’s a winner

Without being juiced.

Over the years as we

Watched him come into his own,

Gardner’s defense and offense

Earned him his throne.

As the King of Clutch emerged

especially this season,

We knew we were blessed

With Gardy for a reason.

Whether we sit and watch

Him hit bunts or dingers,

You can’t help but see

How Gardner is a Ringer.

Amidst diving catches and

Game-saving snags,

That Gold Glove was won

And we never heard a brag.

But what about his speed?

Man, the jokester can fly

And on the bench?

Well, he’s just a good guy.

The unofficial captain and

Birthday boy (make a wish!)

When the game’s on the line,

He’s the one we want at the dish.

Brett Gardner came to the Yankees

To make our lives better

And it also helps that

He probably looks fabulous in a sweater.

Gardner, you’ve done so much

And the least we can do

Is wish you a Happy Birthday

With a lame poem or two.

Are you cringing yet? Good. The love for Brett Gardner is immense and he deserves special recognition on his special day.

Happy birthday to the one, the only, Brett Gardner!
