Michael Conforto is now the latest New York Mets star to hit the long term shelf as he hurts his shoulder against Arizona.

Following a strong 4-2 victory over Arizona yesterday, the New York Mets were looking for a series split this afternoon. Instead, the season narrative continued as young Michael Conforto found himself the latest Met to hit the shelf with a serious injury.

The agony continues.

Yoenis Céspedes opened the scoring in the bottom of the fourth with a mammoth 430 solo home run to left field.

In the top half of the fifth, the Diamondbacks left fielder Grégor Blanco scored Rey Fuentes on a single.

Later in the inning, shortstop Ketel Marte scored Chris Herrmann on a sacrifice fly and put Arizona up 2-1.

In the bottom half, Mets outfielder Michael Conforto became the latest Met to suffer a serious injury this season.

Conforto missed a 2-0 offering from Diamondbacks starter Robbie Ray and immediately fell to the floor, clutching his left shoulder.

Conforto was immediately assisted off the field by Mets trainer Ray Ramirez, and Brandon Nimmo replaced him.

Even before the game was over, the 24-year-old was diagnosed with a dislocated shoulder, and it is very unlikely that he plays again this season.

This week, starters Steven Matz and Zack Wheeler were both shut down for the season. Things got far worse for New York on Thursday, as they lost their best hitter.

The top of the sixth inning saw Arizona increase their lead to 3-1 after a RBI single from Brandon Drury scored Paul Goldschmidt.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, the Mets found themselves with a golden opportunity to tie or even take the lead.

However, with the bases loaded, Nimmo cut the lead to one with a RBI groundout, and that would be all of New York’s scoring in the inning.

Mets starter Rafael Montero went 5.1 innings, allowed seven hits, three runs, and struck out five.

In relief, Josh Smoker, Chasen Bradford, and Erik Goeddel threw 3.2 innings of brilliance, including a combined seven strikeouts.

Tomorrow night, the Mets will open up a series against NL East rival Washington Nationals when Jacob deGrom (13-7, 3.49) toes the rubber against A.J. Cole (1-3, 5.32).
