After a commanding win in game one of their three-game set with the Detroit Tigers, the New York Yankees are looking to take just their third road series since May 19.
Game One was decided early thanks to the offensive showcase, but the New York Yankees shouldn’t need a whole lot for Game 2 as they send Luis Severino to the hill to take on the Detroit Tigers.
The 23-year-old ace is coming off his 10th win of the season on Thursday at Citi Field against the Mets, where he fanned nine over 6.1 innings of one-run (unearned) work. That marked the sixth time in seven starts since the All-Star break that Severino allowed one run-or-fewer.
He has also won five of his last six starts and is the only pitcher in the American League this season to win four straight starts while allowing one run-or-fewer in each.
On the other side, Jordan Zimmerman will take the ball for Detroit in attempt to cool down the offense that scored 14 runs the previous night.
In his last outing against the Los Angeles Dodgers, the righty suffered his 10thh loss of the season by allowing seven runs on 10 hits with two walks and five strikeouts in 5.1 innings. That marked the second straight start he allowed seven earned runs, increasing his season ERA to 5.87.
While those numbers won’t make Tigers’ fans optimistic, Zimmermann has faced the Yankees four times in his career and owns a 3-0 record with a 1.33 ERA and 21 strikeouts. In each outing, Zimmermann has worked at least 6.0 innings and allowed two earned runs-or-less. Notwithstanding his current rough patch, we could see a pretty nice pitching matchup in the middle-game.

Player To Watch: Nicholas Castellanos
Castellanos has been a thorn in the Yankees’ side this season by going 5-for-15 (.333) against them with two home runs in four games. He also has a little taste of success against Severino as he enters Wednesday’s game with four hits in five at-bats against the young ace.
Up Goes Frazier:
Since the start of the Boston series on August 18, third baseman Todd Frazier has gone 6-for-13 (.462) with two home runs, a triple and five RBI’s in four games. That .462 batting average is the sixth-best in Major Leagues in that span among batters with at least 15 plate appearances.
