With David Wright trying his best to return to the New York Mets, the organization is now considering moving him across the diamond to first base.
This day was bound to come given all of the injury issues David Wright has had.
New York Mets general manager Sandy Alderson told Mike Puma of the New York Post that the team will consider moving Wright to another position.
“Now, as we go into 2018, do we build on what we learned in 2017 and act accordingly and consider moving David to another position, that sort of thing? That is all something that has to be evaluated as we get into the offseason.”
This has been mentioned before, and Wright himself admitted the move may be necessary. Back in May, manager Terry Collins told NJ.com’s Abbey Mastracco that Wright told him, “I think I need to get a first baseman’s glove.”
The team has held off on making a move at third base to wait for Wright, something that Alderson admitted may have been a mistake. “Not that we have played terribly at third base,” he told Puma, “but we didn’t go into the season with a solidified situation in part because we weren’t sure what David’s condition would be.”
Wright is one of the greatest Mets of all-time, but this news isn’t all that surprising. The big question is whether the organization would actually shift him across the diamond, as Dominic Smith has been pegged as the first baseman of the future.
At this point, the Mets need to go into 2018 expecting nothing from Wright. Anything he brings is a bonus — but with his recent injury problems, he can’t be relied on to stay healthy.
It’s always sad when a career is affected so much by injury. But when it happens to the captain of the team, a beloved figure at the ballpark and an all around great guy, it hurts even more.
Wright has had a great career. It’s a shame to see the end this way.
