Marlins slugger Giancarlo Stanton has cleared trade waivers, which could potentially set up a scenario where the New York Yankees make a deal for him.
The New York Yankees are in an interesting situation at the moment, where they are looking to compete in the present but also prepare for the future as well.
One man who has just cleared waivers who could be beneficial in both of those sectors is the right-handed behemoth, Giancarlo Stanton.
In his last 15 games, Stanton is slashing .357/.438/1.000 with an eye-popping 11 home runs and 21 RBI’s. He has taken MLB by storm with his spectacular power showcase.
To go along with this, his recent power tear has put him in the MLB lead for home runs with 44 and is on pace to hit over 60 on the season.
But what are the realistic odds that the Yankees could get a deal done for Stanton before the month of August ends? Very unlikely, but the possibility is still there.
If this trade were to go down, New York would surely have to part with either one of or both of Gleyber Torres and Clint Frazier, their top two prospects.
To go along with Torres and/or Frazier, the Yankees would have to add a few mid-tier prospects like Tyler Wade or Miguel Andujar as well as a player with a hefty contract to try and balance out the money.
In addition to the prospects, the “Evil Empire” would likely throw either Masahiro Tanaka or Jacoby Ellsbury into the trade as a way to try and balance out the money they would be taking on with Stanton’s massive contract.
Over the next 10 seasons, Stanton will be owed $295 million through his age-37 season, which has turned a lot of teams away from the big slugger.
While the Yankees could certainly afford to take on a deal this hefty, it is very unlikely they would do so considering they are trying to get their payroll under the $200 million mark after this season.
However, if they put this goal to the side for a few more years they could set themselves up for a simply devastating lineup that would include the likes of Gary Sanchez, Aaron Judge, and Giancarlo Stanton.
A move of this caliber would put the rest of MLB in a frenzy to put it simply and there is no telling what a Yankees team with that kind of lineup could do for years to come.
Don’t get too excited just yet though, Stanton would surely make the Yankees World Series favorites for 2017 and years to come, but as of now a deal before September arrives does not seem too likely.
Whether if it is because of the Yankees unwillingness to go over the salary cap or them not wanting to part with top prospects, most signs are pointing to a no as of now.
But who knows, maybe the Yankees old friend Derek Jeter could do New York a favor and send Stanton over to the Big Apple.
