After a day off following their 20-12 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Friday night, the New York Giants were back on the practice field on Sunday.

The practice was relatively light as the team did not practice in full pads but there were several takeaways from practice.

1. Geno Smith seems to have the edge on being the backup quarterback

EAST RUTHERFORD—At practice on Sunday, it was Geno Smith and not Josh Johnson who was taking reps with the second team offense in 7-on-7 drills, 11-on-11 and during Ben McAdoo’s two-minute offense.

No official word has been made yet, but all signs points towards Geno being named the backup to Eli Manning when the Giants play the Browns next Monday night.

2. Running backs were heavily involved in the passing game

Throughout practice on Sunday, Eli Manning got Paul Perkins and Shane Vereen involved in the passing game, catching passes in the flat. This could be a sign of things to come in the regular season as teams look to take away the Giants big play receivers.

3. Matt LaCosse had an excellent day

Giants tight end Matt LaCosse made a nice diving catch from Josh Johnson down the right sideline and later caught a seam pass for a 30-yard touchdown. Yesterday’s performance definitely helped his chances of making the roster.

4. Odell likes to put on a show for the fans.

Whether it was making ridiculous one-handed catches or showing off his dance moves, OBJ put on a show for the fans that attended yesterday’s practice session.

5. Donte Deayon is a playmaker

All of the discussion surrounding the Giants talented cornerbacks has been centered around Janoris Jenkins, DRC and Eli Apple. But on Sunday, Donte Deayon made the defensive play of the practice as he intercepted Manning at the goal line as he was trying to connect with Sterling Shepard.  Deayon has been making plans throughout training camp and has a good chance of being the Giants fourth cornerback.
