Welcome to ESNY’s latest Q&A session. Today, we’re answering your questions about the New York Mets. Be sure to keep the questions coming.

Do you think the Mets will have the finances to chase the big name free agents in 2018? – Nicholas Durst

This question comes from ESNY Video and Audio director Nicholas Durst, and it’s a really good one.

The Mets financial situation is always a little bit of a crapshoot, but the initial thinking is yes. The 2018-19 free agent class has a lot of big names, led by Clayton Kershaw, Bryce Harper, Manny Machado, and Dallas Keuchel. The class has been spoken of for years, and it’s easy to see why with names like that available.

The Mets currently have $53 million in payroll committed for the 2019 season, while they have a little over $150 million this season. Assuming they keep their 2018 payroll around this year’s level, that would leave around $100 million free.

Noah Syndergaard will be entering his second arbitration year, Jacob deGrom his third. Both Michael Conforto and Steven Matz will be arbitration eligible for the first time.

Ultimately, it’s safe to assume that around $45-$55 Million will be used on arbitration- eligible players, which leaves around $50 million to spend.

So the Mets will have the money to target a big name free agent. They aren’t likely to, as the organization typically prefers to not spend big money on one or two players, but spread it out evenly to attempt to field a team with few weaknesses.

After the Jay Bruce trade, are the Mets a few injuries away from seeing Tebow? – Zachary Weisleder

I doubt it. While Tim Tebow has put up better numbers with the High-A St. Lucie Mets than he has anywhere else, they’re still underwhelming. He’s only hitting .248 with a .725 OPS. He’s not a great fielder, as his fielding percentage is only .957.

He shouldn’t be the player called on by the team to replace injured players. There are players who are better, playing at higher levels and are further along in their development than him.

The Mets even have options outside of the traditional outfielders to bring up. Matt Reynolds has the ability to play a corner outfield position. Currently injured utility man TJ Rivera has played several positions. It’s not a stretch to think that he could play the outfield. There are better options than Tebow.

But there are a couple of nagging thoughts that I can’t get out of my head that makes me wonder.

We’re talking about the Mets. The Mets are owned by the Wilpons. The Wilpons love money. And Tebow on the Mets would make them a ton of money in both ticket and merchandise sales.

So as much as I want to say we won’t see Tebow up here, the truth is that I don’t know if we will. It’s hard to say for sure with the way the Mets have been run over the past 15 years.

The Mets shouldn’t bring him up, and I’d be surprised if they did. But I wouldn’t be shocked.
