Now that Quincy Enunwa is on the shelf for the entire season, young Charone Peake has a tremendous opportunity with the New York Jets in 2017.
With no Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker, Quincy Enunwa was slated to be the New York Jets number one wideout this year. His season has already come to end with a bulging disk in his neck.
Robby Anderson and Marquess Wilson are now looking like the top receivers for the Jets, but it should also create a golden opportunity for Charone Peake.
Peake was a seventh round selection in last years draft out of Clemson. He had limited playing time during his rookie season as he was targeted 35 times snagging 19 of those targets for 186 yards.
His only touchdown came last year on a fumble recovery, which was a real heads up play.
Peake is an interesting player. He was a five-star recruit coming out of high school, according to ESPN. He chose Clemson University where he got buried behind other talented receivers such as Sammy Watkins, DeAndre Hopkins, and Martavis Bryant.
In other words, he just never stood out at Clemson. His most productive season was his senior year in which he recorded 50 receptions and five touchdowns.
But Peake does have what you are looking for in a receiver. He has size, 6-foot-2 and 209 pounds. And he also has speed, running a 4.45 in a 40-yard dash.
Because of his physical attributes, some believe, after the draft last year, that he has the potential to be a late round gem for the New York Jets.
The question is, can he put it all to use on the football field? With so many question marks surrounding the New York Jets receivers, he has a chance to show the Jets that he belongs this pre-season.
The Jets drafted two receivers in this years draft, ArDarius Stewart and Chad Hensen. Both of these guys are looking to have an impact right away.
Peake cannot afford to let either one of these guys outplay him. Otherwise, he could once again find himself buried on the depth chart or perhaps off the team.
This is an opportunity for all the Jets receivers to step up and show what they can do. But Peake, as mentioned, has the look to be a star wideout. The next few weeks will certainly tell us more about him.
