Eddie Olczyk, the former Black Ace of the 1994 Stanley Cup Champion New York Rangers, has been diagnosed with colon cancer.
Tuesday, current NBC Sports’ broadcaster Eddie Olczyk announced that he is battling a form of colon cancer.
Per the announcement, released by one of his former teams, the Chicago Blackhawks, Olczyk had a tumor removed and is going to receive chemotherapy as part of the treatment in the coming weeks. He is expected to return to work with NBC once his treatment is completed.
Olczyk spent 16 years in the NHL, beginning with the 1984-85 season. He finished his career with 794 points (342 G, 452 A) over 1,031 games for the Chicago Blackhawks, Winnipeg Jets, Pittsburgh Penguins, New York Rangers, Toronto Maple Leafs and Los Angeles Kings.
Olczyk also spent time behind the bench, serving as the head coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins twice, in the 2003-04 season and again in the 2005-06 campaign. He accumulated a record of 31-64-10.
He is currently the in-game analyst for the Chicago Blackhawks and, along with Mike Emerick, comprises NBC Sports’ top announcing team for NHL games.
