Two New York Mets prospects earned awards following phenomenal individual play over the past week/month while Ike Davis pitches.
Yesterday, St. Lucie Mets first baseman Peter Alonso was named the Florida State League’s Player of the Month after a strong July. Alonso hit .336 over 29 games and slugged eight home runs.
Alonso’s strong play in July has lifted his batting average to .291 and lowered his strikeout rate to just 19-percent.
While first baseman Dominic Smith has been tearing things up for the Las Vegas 51s in Triple-A all year, Alonso has recently taken the baseball world by storm. It’ll be interesting to see how the Mets tackle this first-base surplus in the coming years.
In addition, Alonso was also named to the MLB Pipeline’s team of the week, a lineup that consists of the top performing minor leaguers spanning several different leagues.
Last night, Mets pitching prospect and current member of the Binghamton Rumble Ponies, Corey Oswalt, was named the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week.
Between July 31st and August 6th, Oswalt dominated in his lone start. The 6-foot-5, 250-pound righty went 1-0 after throwing a complete game shutout and striking out six against the Trenton Thunder.
Oswalt’s 2017 season has been a strong one. The 23-year-old has compiled an 8-4 record and leads the league with a 2.43 ERA in 19 starts.
Former New York Mets first baseman Ike Davis, who now is now a pitcher in the Dodgers organization, impressed during his first appearance in the Arizona League.
Davis struck out the side against the AZL Padres in his lone inning on Monday, and his fastball was clocked in the high 80’s and low 90’s according to FanGraphs’ Eric Longenhagen.
For those who don’t remember, Davis was a member of the Mets from 2010 to 2014. In 2012, the lefty slugged 32 home runs but was never able to build on it in the years that followed.
In fact, Davis failed to eclipse an 11 home run total in a single season after 2012. Since leaving New York, Davis has played for the New York Yankees, Pittsburgh Pirates, and Oakland Athletics.
Los Angeles signed Davis to a minor-league deal in late January, and if this switch to pitching saves his career, it appears as if the Dodgers have found a diamond in the rough.
