Friday night in Seattle, the New York Mets (48-53) were able to snap a two-game losing streak. Their two most dependable batters, Michael Conforto and Jay Bruce were the reasons why.
In the top of the first inning, Jay Bruce obliterated a two-run, 390-foot bomb to right field, his 27th of the season and seventh this month.
Bruce has been one of New York’s only consistent bats this season, and his production has been worth well more than the $13 million he is making this year.
Two innings later, Michael Conforto (M.C. Hammer) blasted his 20th homer of the season. A near-identical home run to Bruce, the 383-foot solo shot to right field put New York up 3-0.
Later in the inning, Asdrubal Cabrera scored on a sacrifice fly from Wilmer Flores, and the Mets were up 4-0.
Following a miraculous fifth inning comeback in which the Mariners plated four and took a 5-4 lead, Conforto once again saved the day.
Conforto blasted a 343-foot solo home run to right, his second of the evening, and sparked a three-run inning that would give New York a lead they would not relinquish.
Conforto’s 2017 campaign has been nothing short of unbelievable. The 24-year-old is hitting .291 with 59 runs, 21 homers, and 54 RBIs in just 285 at-bats. Born and raised in Seattle, last night must have been very special for Conforto.
Following the home run, recently activated infielder Neil Walker singled in Cabrera, who finished the game with three runs. Curtis Granderson followed up the RBI single with one of his own, scoring Flores.
Mets starter Rafael Montero lasted just 4.2 innings, allowing five runs, walked five, and struck out five.
After Hansel Robles, Jerry Blevins (5-0) and Paul Sewald combined for three scoreless innings of relief, Addison Reed captured his 19th save of the season.
New York was able to accomplish something they had done just two times this season going into last night, win when losing after the seventh inning.
Jacob deGrom (12-3, 3.30 ERA) will look to extend his personal winning streak to nine consecutive starts Saturday afternoon in Game 2 of the series. Seattle will answer with Yovani Gallardo (4-7, 5.58 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 4:10 p.m. ET.
