With Mika Zibanejad’s New Contract Announced, The Rangers Have All Players Signed and Under Contract.

Mika Zibanejad and the New York Rangers reached a five-year deal, with an AAV of $5.3 million. The Rangers now have no remaining restricted free agents and still have approximately $3,050,556 million in projected cap space.(as per Caprfriednly.com)

The Rangers still need to fill a hole at the center position. I would think the Tyler Bozak rumors, and that’s what they are right now, may pick up steam. The Rangers could possibly include defenseman Nick Holden in any potential trade deals with Toronto — or any other team for that matter. Holden will be an unrestricted free agent at season’s end and his cap hit for this year is $1.65 million. That amount added to the projected cap space available of $3 million the team has now should give them an opportunity to acquire a solid center. Nick Holden started last season off very hot but cooled down in the second half and playoffs. The trade for Anthony DeAngelo and signing of Kevin Shattenkirk has now made Holden the 7th or 8th defenseman on the team.

There’s always the chance the Rangers promote from within, too. With Zibanejad, Kevin Hayes and David Desharnais under contract, the organization can shift J.T. Miller from wing to center or can call upon Cristoval Nieves or first-round selection Lias Andersson to fill out the depth chart.

In the end, the signing is fair for both sides. Zibanejad will be a happy man with his new contract and the Rangers still have room to bolster their roster.
