An impressive season has garnered New York Mets outfielder Jay Bruce an impressive accolade, the Heart and Hustle Award. Now he’ll battle 29 other players for the top honor.

Bruce was selected by the Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association as the Mets’ entry in the 30-player field, which includes one active player from each team.

“This year’s Heart and Hustle Award winners are a true representation of the legacy of the game and the players who have come before them,” said Hall of Fame third baseman Brooks Robinson, president of the MLBPAA, per MLB.com’s Manny Randhawa. “It is clear that these 30 men chosen all play the game with relentless pursuit.”

Bruce has been one of the few bright spots in what has been an otherwise forgettable season thus far for the Mets. His consistent production has him near the top of the team’s leaderboards in a slew of categories and among the league leaders in home runs.

He will be recognized for his selection before an upcoming Mets home game at Citi Field.

Votes for the initial preliminary round were tallied just before the All-Star break and were cast by committees comprised of team-specific alumni. The final vote, which will include both alumni and active players, will be conducted closer to the end of the regular season.

According to Randhawa, the award “is bestowed each year upon the active player who most represents a passion for the game of baseball, and best embodies the values, spirit, and tradition of the game.”

No Met has won the final vote in the 12 years since the MLBPAA began bestowing this award on a worthy player in 2005. The winner will be announced on November 14 during the 18th annual Legends for Youth Dinner in Manhattan.
