The Houston Astros had a funeral for Carlos Beltran‘s glove since it’s rarely used.
All good things must come to an end. That doesn’t apply to just people but sports equipment too.
The Houston Astros held a funeral for Carlos Beltran’s glove on Monday before their game against the Seattle Mariners. Beltran has spent a majority of his time as the designated hitter and hasn’t played in the outfield since May 16. The Astros wore all black to the funeral and Brain McCann dressed as a priest, according to Mike Tuffy of 12UP.com. They even set up fake tombstones and had a box to “bury” the glove in.
After the funeral, McCann talked to Beltran who said that they are just having fun.
“They’re just having fun with it,” Beltran told Jessica Kleinschmidt and Brian McTaggart of MLB.com. “I don’t know if [his glove] is retired or not. I bring my glove every day to practice. I love it. I have fun with them, they have fun with me. That’s what a team should be. They made me laugh. That’s huge.”
The three-time Gold Glove winner hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning on Monday. He is hitting .235 with 12 home runs and 37 RBIs this season. Maybe the next funeral that the Astros have will be for Beltran’s bat.
RIP Beltran’s glove. You will not be forgotten.
