Michael Silverman of the Boston Herald reported Monday that alongside other MLB infielders, the Boston Red Sox are interested in acquiring T.J. Rivera and/or Asdrubal Cabrera from the Mets.
It appears as if the New York Mets aren’t the only ball club that recognizes the undervalued talent that T.J. Rivera and Asdrubal Cabrera possess, as the Red Sox have inquired about acquiring the pair.
Boston has been left with few legitimate options at third base after Pablo Sandoval was designated for assignment, Travis Shaw was traded to Milwaukee and Yoan Moncada was shipped to Chicago.
While Cabrera appears more expensive on paper, it is Rivera, who has five years of team control remaining, that would be harder for New York to part with.
The 28-year-old Bronx native is hitting .303 with a .808 OPS across 185 at-bats this season, and poses a ton of future potential for what is shaping out to be a Mets rebuild.
Cabrera, 31, is hitting .250 with a 742 OPS over 66 games. The Mets hold an $8 million team option on the veteran infielder for the 2018 season.
The Red Sox have a ‘win now’ mentality and believe that either Cabrera or Rivera can help make their 2017 championship aspirations a reality.
