The New York Yankees announced that they released first baseman Chris Carter, who had been designated for assignment twice in 12 days, on Monday. Carter led the National League with 41 home runs in 2016, but his marriage with the Bronx Bombers wasn’t necessarily a happy one for the slugger.
In 62 games this season, he slashed .201/.284/.370 with eight home runs, 26 RBIs and posted a strikeout rate of 36.5 percent — the third-highest among major league first baseman with at least 200 plate appearances in 2017.
Carter was signed to a one-year, $3.5 million deal this past February for insurance purposes but with unfortunate injuries to Greg Bird and Tyler Austin, he became the go-to man and never got into one of his famous “home run tears.” With Carter out of the picture, the Yankees recently turned to Ji-Man Choi, who will man the fort until GM Brian Cashman makes a move at the deadline or Austin returns from the disabled list.

The All-Star slashed .313/.348/.486 before going down with a hamstring injury on June 26 and hopes to return to the lineup by the end of this weekend’s series with the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park.
- Dan Gartland of Sports Illustrated reports that longtime Yankee shortstop, legend and founder of the Player’s Tribune, Derek Jeter, is approaching a deal to purchase the Miami Marlins from Jeffrey Loria. Jeter’s group, which now features Michael Jordan, is offering $1.2 billion for the team.
