Sunday’s battle of the righties saw Philadelphia starter Nick Pivetta (2-4) both outduel Rafael Montero (1-5) and embarrass the New York Mets offense.

Philadephia’s offense got to Rafael Montero, and early. Montero surrendered four first-inning runs, two of which came off the bat of Maikel Franco, who lasered a RBI double 400 ft to straight away center field.

New York’s lone run came in the bottom of the fifth inning when T.J. Rivera blasted a solo shot to right field. However, the homer was the only hit Nick Pivetta would surrender the entire game.

Pivetta threw seven innings, allowed just one hit, (Rivera’s home run) and struck out four.

After a first-inning collapse, Montero was able to pitch 5.1 scoreless frames, but received no offense help whatsoever aside from Rivera’s fifth inning blast. Montero finished with four earned over 6.1, allowing eight hits, but struck out six.

Phillies offense continued pouring it on in the top of the eighth inning, scoring three runs, all from singles. Mets reliever Chase Bradford let up his first three runs of the season on four hits, and the Phillies took a commanding 7-1 lead.

New York recorded just two hits and looked completely different than they had during their four-game winning streak coming into today.
