The New York Mets avenged their series-opening loss Wednesday night with a dominant performance against division-rival Miami.

Steven Matz (2-1) won the battle of the lefties at Marlins Park in Game 2 of a three-game series, taking down Jeff Locke, (0-4) and it wasn’t even close.

The Mets found themselves up 3-0 early thanks to a two-run home run by Asdrubal Cabrera and a RBI single from Jose Reyes. That offensive showing essentially took a sparse Marlins crowd out of the game.

That was more than enough run support for Matz, who tossed seven innings of scoreless ball, scattering six hits along the way while walking one and striking out four. That impressive outing lowered his ERA on the season from 3.60 to 2.67.

The Mets added to their lead in the top of the seventh, as Travis d’Arnaud scored on a fielder’s choice off the bat of T.J. Rivera.

Rivera would score thanks to Curtis Granderson, who has been one of the hottest hitters in baseball of late and went deep for the third consecutive game.

The Mets wouldn’t stop there, as Brandon Nimmo scored Wilmer Flores and Jose Reyes on a two-run single in the top of the eighth inning.

Josh Edgin and Chase Bradford combined for two innings of one-hit baseball in relief, a pleasant surprise for a Mets bullpen that has struggled for much of the season.

The Mets will send Seth Lugo (2-1, 3.72 ERA) to the mound in the rubber game Thursday night, while the Marlins will counter with Jose Urena (6-2, 3.33 ERA).

They are 4-5 on the current road trip, which isn’t bad considering they began the trip by getting swept out into the Pacific Ocean by the Dodgers last week.

Notes

Steven Matz’ seven shutout innings on Wednesday means he has pitched at least six innings without allowing a run in eight of his 32 career starts since making his major-league debut in 2015 (25 percent). That ties Jake Arrieta (20 of 80) for the highest such percentage among the 152 major-league pitchers that have made at least 30 starts over the last three seasons. (Elias)

The Mets have blasted 50 HRs in the month of June, becoming just the fifth NL team since 2000 to hit 50 dingers in a single month. The others: the 2006 and 2003 Atlanta Braves, the 2001 Cincinnati Reds and the 2000 St. Louis Cardinals.
