First base has been a black hole for The New York Yankees this season. If Hosmer is made available, should the Yanks make a move?

Greg Bird, Chris Carter, and Rob Refsnyder. These are the players who have been in charge of the Yankees first base duties this season. Those three players have combined for 28 hits out of 187 at bats which totals a .149 batting average. The Yankees have had some issue at first base, to say the least.

In Greg Bird’s defense, he appeared to be playing while injured. However the potential he showed in spring, and during his rookie campaign could make him the perfect centerpiece for an Eric Hosmer trade.

Hosmer is slashing .309/.360/.448 with five home runs this season. Although the power numbers are not exactly intriguing, the Royals first baseman has just as many homers as all three Yankees first basemen combined and owns the second-highest batting average (.309) among Major League first basemen.

The Royals are currently last in the American League Central with a 24-32 record, and it’s been rumored that they could be on the cusp of a firesale at the deadline. The core that helped the Royals take home the 2015 World Series is more than likely going to split up.

The Yankees are in a position right now that most teams in baseball wish they were. First place and the assets to trade for anyone in the league. Although Hosmer is an outstanding talent, he will not cost a boat load for the Yankees, due to his expiring contract at the end of the year.w

While the contract could be a turn off for the Yankees as they gear up for a 2019 free agency palooza, Hosmer would be a huge difference maker on this Yankees team. He is just entering his prime at the age of 27, and he’s young enough to come along for the 5-10 year run that the Yankees may be heading for — if general manager Brian Cashman decides to extend him in the offseason.

There’s an argument that can be made for keeping Greg Bird and riding him out at first, and there is also an argument for going after a first baseman such as Hosmer at the deadline.
