After taking a tough loss in game one at the hands of the Boston Red Sox, the New York Yankees were able to take the middle game on Wednesday night thanks to an extraordinary effort by CC Sabathia and four RBIs by Chris Carter.

Sabathia held the Red Sox to zero runs over eight innings of work en route to his seventh victory of 2017. The 17-year veteran, who posted eight shutout innings for the first time since Sept. 21, 2012, struck out five and walked none to lower his season ERA to 3.66.

On the other side, Rick Porcello struggled mightily against Boston’s American League East rival as he surrendered six runs on eight hits in 5.1 innings pitched. The big blow came in the bottom of the fourth, when the righty served up a monster three-run home run to slugger Chris Carter to give the Yankees a 5-0 and set the tone for the rest of the contest.

New York extended their lead in the seventh on a Matt Holliday RBI infield single to score Brett Gardner before Carter continued his strong night with a RBI single off the wall in the eighth off reliever Blaine Boyer. Gardner, the very next batter, padded the lead just a tad more with a single to left field to score Didi Gregorius, who hit his fifth home run of 2017 in the bottom of the fourth.

The Yankees owned an 8-0 lead entering the ninth and after Jonathan Holder slammed the door shut, they earned the largest shutout win over their arch rivals since Sept. 3, 1965, when they took home a win by a score of 9-0.

Show Stopper:

Sabathia has pitched in seven games following a Yankees’ loss and has given them exactly what they needed — the denial of a losing streak. Including tonight’s win, the 36-year-old improves to 6-0 in those starts including a 1.25 ERA.

Jeffery Maier In Reverse:

In the bottom of the sixth, Carter was looking for his third home run in two games and ripped one deep to right field off Porcello. Just when it seemed as though he went yard yet again, Mookie Betts leaped and made the catch to end the frame.

Upon further review, it seemed as though a fan sitting in the first row actually made contact with the ball and deflected it into the glove of Betts. Crew chief Tom Hallion decided not to review it, so the robbed homer stood as called.

What’s Next:

The Yankees and Red Sox will square off in the series finale on Thursday night in the Bronx. Michael Pineda will get the ball in what will be his 12th start of the season.

Last time out, the 28-year-old took a loss on Friday against the Blue Jays in Toronto by allowing a season-high five earned runs over five innings pitched. Pineda entered Wednesday tied for fifth in the AL in wins, matching his 2016 total of six in 32 starts.

First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. ET and can be caught on the YES Network or on ESPN.
