The New York Jets have traded former first-round pick Calvin Pryor to the Cleveland Browns on Thursday, acquiring LB Demario Davis.

The New York Jets traded away their 2014 first round pick Calvin Pryor to the Cleveland Browns on Thursday for Demario Davis, who was New York’s third-round pick back in 2012. He spent his first four years in the league with Gang Green until he signed a two-year, $8 million deal with the Browns in 2016.

The Jets trading Pryor comes as no surprise, especially since they declined his fifth-year option.  Also, the team drafted Jamal Adams and Marcus Maye, who are both safeties in this year’s draft.

The “Louisville Slugger” has been a disappointment. He did at times live up to his nickname and provided big hits, but he is a liability in coverage.

In the 2015 season, Pryor had a solid year and last season come with big expectations. He simply just never met them and really took a step back. In 44 games with the Jets Pryor had just two career interceptions — both coming in 2015 — and two forced fumbles.

Davis, on the other hand, is coming off a season where he had 89 combined tackles. 59 solo tackles and 40 assist tackles. He also sacked the quarterback twice and caused one fumble.

The 6-foot-2, 235-pound outside linebacker displays speed. He has 4.6 40 time and his quickness helps him set the edge. By no means is he a star but he is a guy that’s not afraid to hit people. Pryor may be someone that can provide big hits but he is far too inconsistent with play. Also, had attitude issues off the field and contributed to a shaky locker room.

More than likely with his option being declined for next season the New York Jets would let him walk away in free agency. Might as well get something for him. Here is Jets’ General Manager Mike Maccagnan’s statement on the trade:
